In the meantime, here are our answers to some of the most common questions about porcelain veneers:
1. What are porcelain veneers?
A veneer is a thin piece of porcelain shaped like a tooth. Every veneer is custom-made to meet the patient’s specific needs and smile goals. Veneers can be used to cover one, several, or all of a person’s teeth in the smile zone. People seek out porcelain veneers if they have one or more teeth with discoloration, chips, gaps, or other cosmetic issues like teeth that are too small or oddly shaped.
2. How are porcelain veneers placed?
Once the veneers have been designed and delivered to our office, we can begin the placement process. This involves removing about half a millimeter of dental enamel from the surface and applying a dental cement to ensure the veneer and tooth have a strong bond. Finally, Dr. Hardt will place the veneer, then he will use a special light to dry the bonding agent.
Small changes to the veneers can be made after placement if necessary.
3. Are all veneers the same color?
No. You get to pick the color! If you want the veneer(s) to match the current shade of your natural teeth, we can do that. However, many people opt for whitening treatment before the veneer is placed. This way, their entire smile is white and bright at the end of their cosmetic dentistry process.
4. Will the process be painful?
Our goal is to make every dental procedure comfortable. We’ll use a local anesthetic during the placement to ensure you don’t feel any pain. Most people report mild discomfort, but not pain during porcelain veneer placement.
5. How long do they last?
It’s important to know that porcelain veneers are a life-long commitment. Once the enamel on your natural teeth has been removed, it cannot be replaced. That being said, porcelain veneers last between 10 and 15 years before they need to be replaced.
To ensure your veneers last as long as possible, practice good oral hygiene, visit the dentist at least twice a year, wear a mouthguard if you have bruxism issues or while playing sports, and avoid using your teeth as tools!
6. Do veneers stain?
Porcelain veneers do not stain because porcelain is not as porous as natural teeth. This is a great benefit of porcelain veneers but can also cause problems if the rest of your teeth become discolored. If this occurs, professional teeth whitening should be able to restore the brightness of your smile.
