How Do Dental Implants Work (dental implants, procedure)

Dental implants are helpful to many people who have a multitude of issues with their teeth. This procedure has been used in dentistry for centuries. There has been evidence that in approximately 2500 BC, the ancient Egyptians tried to stabilize teeth that were periodontally involved with the use of ligature wire made of gold. A dental implant is a surgical component that borders with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. How do dental implants work? The dental implant, usually a cylindrical and/or tapered post made of titanium, is placed surgically into the jawbone. As you heal, your implant will fuse with, your natural jawbone, with the two growing together to form a strong and long-lasting foundation for your replacement teeth

How are Dental Implants Done

The entire procedure from start to finish could take up to several months to finish. Most of this time will be recovery time and wait for new bone growth in your jaw. During surgery to place the dental implant, your oral surgeon makes an incision to open your gum and expose the bone. Holes are drilled into the bone where the dental implant metal post will be placed. Since the post will serve as the tooth root, it’s implanted deep into the bone. At this point in the procedure, you’ll still have a gap where your tooth is missing. A type of partial, temporary denture can be placed for appearance if you feel it is necessary. You can remove this denture while you sleep and while you’re sleeping.
